The `now on, now off' airport project at Jewar is back on track with the UP government finally sending in a request to the Centre for clearance of the much-awaited project

Up chief minister, Akhilesh Yadav, wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting the sanction of two international airports--one at Hiran Gaon in Firozabad district and the second at Jewar in Greater Noida.

Confirmation for this came from several sources. At a two-day con clave organized by Credai (Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Associations of India) recently, UP minister Kamal Khan formally announced plans for an airport in Jewar, on behalf of his chief minister.

Minister of state for civil aviation, Mahesh Sharma, too, said that the Centre received a proposal for an airport at Jewar, in a reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

Expectedly, all the stakeholder in the sector are excited as this news is bound to improve sentiment and give the much-needed boost to the sector. Once the project is approved, the Centre will have to amend the current regulation stipulating that no new airport can come up within a radius of 150km from an existing international airport, in this case the IGI Airport in Delhi, which is being operated by GMR.

Also, the civil aviation ministry will have to offer the contract for building and running the proposed airport to the GMR Group alone, as it has the right of first refusal.

There is also a report that the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) sent a fresh proposal in this regard to the Centre, so that the Union government should have no problem in sanctioning the airport at Jewar.YEIDA has already allocated 2,500 acres in Jewar for this purpose.
